Our Story
Inspired by a Richmond Welcome.
Veranda's story begins with Jane Long, often remembered as the “Mother of Texas.” In 1837, she opened a Richmond boarding house known as The Veranda Hotel. She earned the title “Mother of Texas” after bravely surviving a harsh winter on the Bolivar Peninsula alone with her young daughter and an enslaved girl named Kian. The hotel hosted many iconic founding figures of the Texas Republic. Frequent guests and boarders included Sam Houston, William B. Travis, and Mirabeau B. Lamar. Its broad, welcoming porch inspired the name of today's community. That history continues to shape the Veranda experience: warm, welcoming and grounded in the belief that neighborhoods are stronger when people have places to come together.
